AI and the Information Professions
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the information professions, redefining our understanding of intelligence and its artificial counterparts. This talk explores the fundamentals of AI, including how we can conceptualize generative AI systems like ChatGPT using various metaphors. We'll delve into what users and information professionals alike need to know about AI, from the potential for hallucinations and the intricacies of copyright in generated texts to the expansive promise AI holds for scholars and researchers. AI has the potential to one day level the playing field, particularly in areas like translation and revision, and its integration into daily life is accelerating. We'll discuss how the information professions are already harnessing AI to automate tasks like email creation, summarize documents, and organize materials using natural language processing (NLP). The future is one where AI will be intertwined with our work, offering both opportunities and challenges that we must navigate with care and innovation.
